Political strategist Kateryna Odarchenko provided a comprehensive analysis of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s call to involve the European Union and NATO in negotiations with Russia. In an interview with the FREEDOM TV channel, Odarchenko examined the feasibility of having Western partners at the negotiation table and highlighted what security guarantees Ukraine truly needs.
Odarchenko emphasized that while Zelensky’s proposal to involve EU and NATO representatives in negotiations with Russia is a strategic move, its implementation is fraught with challenges. “The presence of partners at the table is not just about participation; it’s about ensuring accountability and strengthening Ukraine’s bargaining position,” she noted. However, she also highlighted the potential reluctance of some Western partners to directly engage in negotiations with Russia, given geopolitical risks and internal political considerations.
One of the most critical points raised by Odarchenko was the question of security guarantees for Ukraine. She explained that for Ukraine, true security lies in binding international commitments rather than verbal assurances. “Real guarantees should be formalized through defense pacts, security agreements, or deeper integration with NATO structures,” she stated, stressing that such guarantees should be enforceable and not left to interpretation.
Odarchenko also touched on the broader strategic importance of having EU and NATO countries involved in negotiations. Their presence, she argued, would deter potential violations of any future agreements and hold Russia accountable for its actions. “Without strong third-party oversight, past experiences have shown that ceasefire agreements and memorandums can be violated with impunity,” Odarchenko said.
